Bottled cocktail review: RumChata

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

RumChata ready-to-drink cocktail review by The Pursuit of CocktailsTis the season

As soon as December hits, I'm looking for warm, rich cocktails everywhere I go. Hot apple cider with whiskey? Yes please. Boozy hot chocolate? Don't even ask, just bring it to me. A little nip for my coffee? Heck yeah! Which is what finally pushed me to try RumChata for this blog. I held off last year because I wasn't sure it really qualified as a bottled cocktail. But as I've written more of these reviews I'm realizing that my main goal is always an easy way to serve cocktails to a crowd of friends the same way you'd serve wine.

In the case of RumChata, it is totally an easy cocktail to entertain with. You can simply put the bottle out for your guests with a variety of mixers or small sipping glasses for those who like to drink it straight. Or in my case, you can take this bottle to a parade with a to-go jug of Starbucks coffee and let your friends spike their own coffees as they see fit. (This was a big hit in case you are wondering. I highly recommend this!)

So that's how we got here. That is why I officially doing a review of RumChata and according to my Instagram poll, 53% of you haven't tried RumChata yet so I feel like it's a totally valid *cocktail* to review today. Hopefully this review will steer lots of you towards the liquor section next time you're at the store.

Here is my official review of RumChata:

Five cocktail shakers

Ummmm, why did I wait so long to try this delightful *cocktail*? This is literally my new favorite way to have an evening night cap. Do people still say that? Anyway, I have to say, a little bit of this in some hot chocolate is the way to live.

The flavor is really rich. I love horchata so I was expecting it to be good but this was even better than I imagined. It is so much richer than regular horchata. It's almost like it's condensed horchata flavor with some booze added. I love it!!

As I've mentioned, I've tried it in coffee and hot chocolate and it is lovely in both. I also had recommendations to try it with a little bit of Fireball whiskey (all the yes!) or root beer. RumChata is super versatile so I don't think you can go wrong.

If you are headed to a holiday party this weekend, or you just have to survive a family gathering, I highly recommend taking a bottle of RumChata with you!

Sweetness

Five cocktail shakers
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

Pretty sweet! This may be the sweetest cocktail to date. It's a tie with Van Meer's Brownie liqueur. I love a sweet cocktail so this works for me. While a lot of you responded to my Instagram poll saying you mix your RumChata, my sugar loving friend A likes to drink it straight. I tried it straight too for the sake of this review and it was pretty darn sweet straight out of the bottle. But the flavor was great. It had a bit of the alcohol kick back that other liqueurs do but it didn't bother me.

If you like a super sweet cocktail for the cold winter months, RumChata is definitely for you.

Booziness

Three cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

This bottle officially rings in at 13.75% ABV so it's has a good amount of booze in it. And because it is in a bottle like this, it is choose-your-own-adventure about how much you pour into your cup. I did a healthy 2 second pour into my hot chocolate last night and I was happily relaxed several sips into my Christmas movie night. It was delightful!

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

Yep! I plan to have it on hand all winter. It's perfect for all my hot drinks or to sip straight. Plus it would make a nice holiday party hostess gift with a set of cute glasses. I may even know where you can get some... 😜
