Ready-to-drink Cocktail Review: Post Meridiem Old Fashioned and Vodka Gimlet

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Ready-to-drink cocktail review of Post Meridiem Vodka Gimlet and Old Fashioned
Happy Friday cocktail lovers! I'm back with my final installment of trying all of the ready-to-drink cocktails in the Post Meridiem line up. If you missed my previous posts, you can catch up here and here.

This week I tried their Old Fashioned and Lemongrass Vodka Gimlet. Yes, it is a weird pairing but that is just how it worked out. (Pro tip: don't drink these together.) I love Old Fashioned's so I've been saving that one for last. It's the Vodka Gimlet I've been unsure of. I have only had a few gimlets since I started this blog and I'm not sure I understand what a proper gimlet should taste like. BUT all the of the Post Meridiem canned cocktails have been spot on so I'm thinking I can probably take this one as a legit gimlet without worry.

So without further ado, let's dig in!

Post Meridiem Old Fashioned:

Post Meridiem canned cocktail Old Fashioned review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Overall score: 5 / 5

5 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Sweetness:
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl
One out of 5 cocktail shakers
Booziness: 37% ABV or 74 Proof
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos
5 out of 5 cocktail shakers

Yep!! It is just as good as I expected it to be. This is a solid, no frills, just a straight, traditional Old Fashioned. It is rich with a great whiskey flavor. It does not have as much secondary flavor as others I've had that add a touch of cherry or something eccentric like rock candy. This Old Fashioned is a purist version.

It is also the only one of the Post Meridiem cocktails that does not feature their real lime juice - which makes sense, lime would be weird in an Old Fashioned. But the missing lime juice here made me really re-appreicate the lime juice in their other cocktails. It really does brighten up the whole drink.

This ready-to-drink Old Fashioned is the perfect whiskey drink to round out the Post Meridiem line up. It is slightly bitter, rich in bourbon flavor, and strong af ringing in at 74 proof making it the most boozy of the bunch.

Post Meridiem Lemongrass Vodka Gimlet:

Post Meridiem Vodka Gimlet ready-to-drink cocktail review by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Overall score: 4/ 5

4 out 5 cocktail shakers
Sweetness:
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl
One out of 5 cocktail shakers
Booziness:  25% ABV or 50 Proof
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos

This Lemongrass Vodka Gimlet tripped me up a bit. When I took the first sip there was a flavor that I just couldn't put my finger on, I could come up with the right word to describe it. Woody but not woody. Lemony but in a different way. After multiple sips - okay half the cocktail - I finally gave up and googled what "lemongrass oil" tastes like. Google says it is herby, slightly sharp and tangy taste without the bitterness of lemon - which is what I was trying to come up with on my own I think. The lemon but not lemon thing really threw me!

Overall, I do like this cocktail - slightly less than the other Post Meridiem canned cocktails but only because of my personal taste preferences. This cocktail is bright and lemony in a different kind of way. It also has a kick to it that reminds you that it *is not* a spiked lemonade. It's boozy, slightly citrus but not as much as you'd expect, with a herbal lemon flavor. It's a super interesting cocktail! I would not hesitate to recommend this one to a friend because it is so different from anything else I've tried. I say go for it! Give this one a go - especially if you like to try things that are off the beaten path.

Would I buy these again?

Definitely! The Post Meridem cocktails are officially in my Top 10. I'd love to have a stash of all of them on hand.

If you get a chance, give this brand a try. One thing I haven't mentioned in any of my post about this brand is about their name. After I looked it up - which I try not to do until I'm done so that I'm not swayed by any brand propaganda 😜 - I found this explanation on their website and it is too good not to share. This is so close to the meaning of my own brand "The Pursuit of Cocktails" that I instantly fell in love with this idea.

Here is the idea behind the Post Merdiem name:

Inspired by the magic hour when the sun begins to set, our name marks the tipping point between winding down the day and starting the evening. Pouring a timeless cocktail crafted from the highest quality ingredients is the perfect PM ritual, no matter where you are. Post Meridiem -> After Midday -> Time for a cocktail

Cheers to that! If you'd like to try some of the Post Meridiem cocktails you can pick them up online.

Until next week, cheers my dears!
