Hi cocktail lovers! I'm back, after a short delay, to review the ready-to-drink Old Fashioned cocktail Slow and Low from Hochstadter's this week. If you saw my post a few weeks ago then you saw that I originally had a tiny can of this cocktail. I loved that small little can but when I posted a sneak peek of my review the brand instantly reached out and let me know something was off with my can of Slow & Low. Like a cocktail super hero, they swooped in and sent me a full sized bottle and a ton of super awesome swag to make it right. Talk about going above and beyond! That being said, I promise I'm not going to let any of that affect my review of this pre-made cocktail.
I've been watching and interested in the Slow & Low brand for a few years. Their Instagram has a level of cool, rebel swagger that I can only dream of living. You know I love branding but I'm also always a little worried a brand with that much of an aura or lifestyle on social might be "all hat, no cattle" as my family would say. But despite all of that, I still didn't hesitate to pick it up when I finally spotted it in a store - which was a little like spotting a unicorn so I'll include a link at the bottom where you can order it online so you won't have to hunt for multiple years like I did.
So let's see! Does the cocktail inside this bottle live up to it's brand personality?
Here is my official review of the Slow and Low:
I'm going to go with yes. Yes, Slow & Low does live up to their swagger in my book - which is a strong statement if you take a peek at their Instagram. I really really really wanted this to be a good cocktail and it totally is. I live for whiskey cocktails and I've been a fan of Old Fashioned's for a long time. I've ordered them at all levels of bars including some of the most hipster, underground bars you can find in Portland so I feel qualified to say - this is a damn good Old Fashioned and it has a little something extra to it that sets it apart.
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl
This ready-to-drink Old Fashioned is a touch sweeter than other Old Fashioned's I've tried. I really like the sweeter touch to this cocktail. I think it balances out the booziness really well.
The label describes this cocktail as being made with raw honey and rock candy which would explain the extra sweetness. I might not have picked up on those flavors specifically but I can definitely appreciate that there is something extra special, and sweeter, about this Old Fashioned from Slow & Low.
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos
Officially this one rings in at 84 proof - which might be the strongest cocktail I've reviewed to date.
A serving of this ready-to-drink Old Fashioned cocktail according to the bottle is 1.5 ounces which is slightly more than a standard shot glass. At first I thought that seemed like barely anything. Then I took a drink and very quickly realized that an ounce of this cocktail is plenty. This cocktail is strong af!!! I love it.
I think Slow & Low might be a half-sipping cocktail - because even a full sip is crazy strong and don't even think about gulping this down like a hard seltzer or light beer! Enjoy this one slow just like the name says.
Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?
Hell yes I will. And I will also be purchasing a bottle of this for all booze-worthy gifting occasions from now for any friend of mine that loves whiskey. This Old Fashioned is so good I will never consider making an Old Fashioned from scratch at home again.
And - and this is super high praise - I might even stop ordering Old Fashioned's at bars because now I love this one so much that others just won't live up to my standards now.
If you want to try Slow & Low yourself - and you totally should - you can pick it up online here.
