Canned Cocktail Review: Ole Smoky Mountain Mule, Mountain 'Rita, and Blackberry Lemonade

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Ole Smoky moonshine canned cocktails reviewed by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Happy Friday cocktail lovers! I'm back to try the rest of the Ole Smoky canned cocktails this week. If you missed my post last week, I originally was going to try two last week and two this week but then I took my first sip of their Apple Ginger cocktail and that plan went out the window. You can head over to that post here to catch up.

This week I'm trying the other three cocktails - the Mountain Mule, the Mountain 'Rita, and the Blackberry Lemonade. I've been excited to try this line for months but I'm a little nervous to try other three since I loved the Apple Ginger so much. I'm afraid that I already tried my favorite one - but we'll see!

One thing I didn't mention last week and I just have to talk about about the packaging on these Ole Smoky canned cocktails. The cans are new for Ole Smoky. The majority of their line comes in clear glass jars just like moonshine has for decades and decades. It's tradition! And I am soooo impressed with how they carried that heritage over to their canned cocktails. The design of the label makes the can look exactly like a clear jar. The label even has ridges were the threads are so you can feel the texture of the jar. It's unreal and I absolutely die over details like that. That alone is worth an award!

But you can't just serve empty cans so let's make sure what is inside is just as well done as the outside. Here we go! Here are my official reviews of the other three canned cocktails from Ole Smoky.

Ole Smoky Mountain Mule:

Ole Smoky moonshine Mountain Mule canned cocktail reviewed by The Pursuit of Cocktails

Overall score: 4 / 5

4 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Sweetness:
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl
2 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Booziness: 9% ABV
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos
4 out 5 cocktail shakers

I've tried a lot newer takes on a mule but I've never tried one with moonshine until now.

This tastes exactly like you'd expect a Moscow Mule to taste but with no vodka flavor. Or any liquor flavor at all. There is not moonshine or alcohol flavor at all but you can definitely feel the booziness.

The Ole Smoky mule is lighter on the ginger beer flavor than some other mules I've tried - some of them get pretty sharp and bitter. This one is on the other end of that with just the slightest bite. If you like mules but haven't come around to the bite of ginger beer (it took me awhile too) then definitely give this one a try!

Ole Smoky Mountain 'Rita:

Overall score: 4/ 5

Sweetness:

2 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Booziness:  9% ABV

I've been trying a lot of margaritas recently so I was interested to see how this one would stack up. It's pretty darn good. It is a classic margarita - sans tequila. It has all the right margarita flavors, tart and citrusy, but without any tequila. It is very similar to the mule in that regard. It has the full cocktail flavor you'd expect but no liquor taste which is pretty cool.

If you like the idea of margaritas but don't like to taste the tequila then you should definitely try this one from Ole Smoky. The moonshine doesn't have a flavor so the focus is on the lightly sweet citrus and it is just as boozy as a good margarita should be.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how close this is to a standard margarita but with moonshine instead of tequila. I'm not sure how they did that but I like it! The Mountain 'Rita has good flavor, light bubbles, it is light but also boozy. This is a solid choice for sure.

Ole Smoky Blackberry Lemonade:

Overall score: 5/ 5
5 out of 5 cocktail shakers
Sweetness:
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

Booziness:  9% ABV

Winner winner, chicken dinner!! This Blackberry Lemonade is sooooo good!! I could smell the blackberries as soon as I popped the top. This is basically like drinking straight blackberry juice with a hint of bubbly water. The berry flavor is rich and sweet. It is way more blackberry than lemonade. And it has just the right amount of carbonation to give it bubbles without being overly fizzy like a soda. This cocktail is light without being light on flavor OR light on boozy which is a winning combination in my book.

I'm not sure what else to say about the Blackberry Lemonade except that I absolutely love it. It is just as good as the Ole Smoky Apple Ginger which I also flipped for. But this one is totally different - which means I don't have to pick a favorite. I pick them both!!!

10/10 - you've gotta try this one!

One more thing worth noting: After trying all of the Ole Smoky canned cocktails now I can confirm that there is absolutely no alcohol taste to any of these cocktails but they are very strong! Each can really holds two cocktails worth. So if you don't like the taste of alcohol but still like a buzz or you were worried about what moonshine tastes like, don't sleep on the Ole Smoky canned cocktails. They are so good, so flavor, so boozy with no liquor flavor.

Would I buy these again?

Heck yes I would. I'm a huge fan girl of Ole Smoky after trying all of their canned cocktails. I will for sure be picking up more Apple Ginger and Blackberry Lemonade cans when I get a chance. I also really want to try their jars of moonshine so I think I'll treat myself to one of those soon as well.

Same as last week, the Ole Smoky canned cocktails are only available in store in Tennessee, Georgia, Indiana, Texas, Florida or Ohio for right now but you can pick them up online.
