Canned Cocktail Review: Ole Smoky Moonshine Apple Pie Ginger

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Ole Smoky Moonshine Apple Pie Ginger canned cocktail reviewed by The Pursuit of Cocktails

I have something brand new for you this week cocktail lovers. Moonshine!!! I have wanted to find a way to work in the Ole Smoky Moonshines since I first spotted them several years ago but moonshine isn't *exactly* a cocktail. Lucky for me, like a gift from the cocktail gods, Ole Smoky recently added four canned cocktails to their line and even luckier, they sent me some!

I have a soft spot for moonshine because of my hillbilly, country girl roots. While I come from a long line of teetotalers, I grew up in moonshine country. I'll never forget my first moonshine experience. It was with a homemade Kahlua type shine that was so good! My second experience was with a more traditional jar of clear that made my eyes water. It's a little bit of midwest heritage that I only got a small dose of, but I've always thought fondly of.

So needless to say when I saw moonshine starting to hit the main stream in liquor stores, I was in. And I can't wait to try my first moonshine cocktail courtesy of Ole Smoky. Let's do this!

Here is my official review of the Apple Pie Ginger from Ole Smoky Moonshine:

5 out of 5 cocktail shakers

Did we just become best friends??

I think this may be my all-time favorite ready-to-drink cocktail I've ever had. This cocktail is perfection! The flavor is this really amazing apple pie, punctuated with cinnamon and a touch of ginger and bubbles that just works on all levels for me. I almost cried I loved it so much. And then I did cry when my can was empty!

I wan't exactly sure what to expect since this was my first moonshine cocktail and man, it did not disappoint. Ole Smoky Moonshine has four moonshine cocktails total and I was originally planning for this post to be two cocktails followed by two more next week. But as soon as I took my first sip of the Apple Pie Ginger that plan was out the window. This ready-to-drink cocktail deserves it's own post for sure! (Come back next week when I'll try more Ole Smoky canned cocktails!)

This Apple Pie Ginger moonshine cocktail has such a great, unique flavor. It is pretty strong in terms of booze but there is no hint of alcohol flavor. It is just really smooth, really tasty, and really really easy to enjoy the whole can without even realizing it.

10/10 - would recommend to a friend but you'll have to get your own can because I'm not sharing :)

Sweetness

3 out of 5 cocktail shakers

One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

This canned cocktail is not overly sweet. I would say it is right in line with the sweetness of apple pie without the a la mode. It has a nice amount of sweet apple flavor but it's not a dessert cocktail by any means. For me, this cocktail was right in the middle of the extra dry to brut spectrum.

Booziness

Four cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos

This ready to drink margarita officially rings in at 9% ABV or 18 proof so it is boozy without being totally over the top. It is worth noting that these cans are pretty big so a full can is really like having two cocktails. I definitely did not share this with a friend but that would probably be more responsible to do if you're into that whole thing. But I'm betting after one sip, you won't want to split it either!

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

YES YES YESSSSS! 1000% yes! I am already missing this canned cocktail and it's only been a day since I had it. This might be my all-time favorite ready-to-drink cocktail - which is saying something because you know your girl has tried a few in her day. 😉

I have three more moonshine cocktails chilling in my fridge right now. I am sure they are going to be amazing. But I also can't see how they could possibly top the Apple Pie Ginger.

Come back next week to see!

And in case you are wanting to get your hands on one of these too, if you are in Tennessee, Georgia, Indiana, Texas, Florida or Ohio, you're in luck. The rest of us will either need to plan a trip to one of their Tennessee locations or try to wait patiently until they are available in our area. Personally, I'm ready to book a flight just to get more of this Apple Pie Ginger moonshine in my life. How many cans do you think fit in a standard suitcase...

Or if you can't wait to try them - and you shouldn't wait, the Ole Smoky Apple Pie Ginger is that good - you can order them online thankfully and have them delivered to your house.
