Canned Cocktail review: Greenbar Distillery Rum + Cola

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Canned cocktail review of Greenbar Distillery's Rum + Cola

Hey all you cool cats and cocktail kittens, is it okay if I start every blog post that way from now on? (I'm still thinking about Tiger King all these months later.) This week I'm trying a ready-to-drink rum and coke! I don't think I've reviewed one of those yet - but I have been known to order one from a bar when I'm feeling uncreative.

However, I'm pretty sure this canned cocktail version from Greenbar Distillery is much more high brow than the well drinks I ordered in college. Not only is it a craft cocktail from an actual distillery, it is also organic which I find means the flavors taste really natural with no chemical-ly aftertaste. It is also gluten-free if that's important for you. All the signs are there for this to be a dang good cocktail so let's just dig in and do the thing!

Here is my official review of Greenbar Distillery's Rum + Cola:

5 out of 5

Okay, yes - I know I've given out a lot of 5/5's lately and I don't want you to think I've gone soft. I haven't, I promise. What is happening is that I'm getting a lot more canned cocktails sent to me directly from the brands - and if they are sending them to me for review then you know they are pretty confident in their product, right?

That is what happened again this week. Greenbar Distillery sent me this Rum + Cola (and another canned cocktail I'll be reviewing next week) and I am absolutely obsessed!! They do have a dang good cocktail! No wonder they wanted to send it to me - thank you, thank you, thank you for that btw!!

This Rum + Cola is such a great cocktail - that just so happens to be in a can, which I think is the ultimate goal. This is a super legit craft cocktail that you can imagine having right in their taproom, but instead you get to have it in the comfort of your own living room.

The can describes this as warm + spicy and that is very true. The rum has this amazingly smooth tropical spice to it. And the cola is rich and delicious. To me this cocktail is the perfect combination of quality small batch rum combined with artisan cola. You can really taste the quality craftsmanship (which I know sounds snooty but it's true) in both parts of this cocktail. I also really love that this is a "full" cocktail. Full of flavor AND booze.

This canned cocktail from Greenbar Distillery isn't trying to be trendy by being light and low cal. It's simply trying to be delicious and it has done that in spades!

Sweetness

4 out of 5
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

It's been a minute since I reviewed a sweet cocktail and this was the perfect one to break that trend. This Rum + Cola canned cocktail has a wonderful sweetness from both the rum and the cola. It's very balanced and for me, it isn't too sweet - but for reference, Dr. Pepper is my very favorite soda. I checked the label because I was so struck by how good the cola part of this cocktail is and sure enough, it is made with real cane sugar. In fact all of the ingredients listed on this can are real foods that I can recognize and pronounce. I love that! And you can taste that difference!

Booziness

4 out of 5
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = OG Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 7% ABV which is pretty dang awesome. I mean, if you're going to have a cocktail you should get at least a little buzz in my book.

For me this ready-to-drink cocktail from Greenbar Distillery has the perfect amount of booziness - enough that you feel it kick in right away but not so much that you have to remind yourself to sip slowly.

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

Yes, I definitely will. This canned cocktail is a nice break from the sea of hard seltzers and light cocktails. This is a real cocktail, with real rum, straight from a distillery - also known as the only way I want my canned cocktails these days.

If you live in Los Angeles you're in luck. You can cruise by their location for a cocktail and a full tour of their distillery. For the rest of us, here is a list of everywhere you can grab these a-mazing Greenbar Distillery Rum + Cola canned cocktails as well as their full line of cocktails and spirits:  https://greenbardistillery.com/contact/find/

I'll be back next week with another cocktail from Greenbar. I'll be reviewing their Whiskey + Soda so make sure to stop back by next Friday. Cheers babes!!
