Boozy kombucha? Um, yes please!!
I should probably start by saying, I love kombucha! The first time I tried kombucha, I was like what the heck is this weird stuff? And then I got a happy little natural buzz and suddenly everyone was prettier and nicer than I remembered. I double checked that it was in fact not alcoholic and was stunned. And that was it. I've been hooked ever since.
Fast forward to a few months ago when I first noticed the Wild Tonic Jun Kombucha in the refrigerated case at Total Wine. Again, I was like - wait what? A boozy version of one of my favorite drinks? As I was reading the bottle I realized that Wild Tonic hails from Sedona, AZ, which happens to be one of my very favorite places on Earth, so obviously I had to try it and here we are. What better way to kick off the new year than with a healthy cocktail of fermented tea and honey.
That natural buzz that makes kombucha so awesome is also prevalent in this "cocktail" along with a nice little boost from the alcohol that wasn't fully fermented away. And I flipping love it. Hang on to your hat fellow kombucha lovers, you are going to want to track this stuff down and try it yourself!
Here is my official review of the Wild Tonic Kombucha:
If you are Team Kombucha, then you will love this new boozy version and I'm speaking directly to you.
If you don't like traditional kombucha, then this probably is not the cocktail for you because it tastes exactly like kombucha. (If you are on Team No-Kombucha-For-Me come back next week for more boozy coffee cocktails. We'll be reviewing three more flavors from Cafe Agave's Spiked Cold Brew line.)
The Wild Tonic Jun Kombucha is delightful! I tried the Raspberry Goji Rose flavor for this review and really liked the taste. I picked up on a hint of raspberry, I don't know if I got goji or rose but I'm not the greatest at that anyway so don't hold that against this drink.
I'm officially dubbing this jun kombucha the perfect school night, night cap. It has just enough booze - boosted by that natural kombucha buzz - to gently melt away your day without the worry of a headache the next morning. A definite lifesaver if you're like me and wine makes you hate life the next morning.
One shaker = not sweet at all // Five shakers = your teeth may curl
If you've ever had the non-boozy variety of kombucha then you know it isn't a sweet beverage. This "hard kombucha" tastes very similar to the traditional kombucha in just about every way including that it has no sweetness to it.
Don't let that scare you away! You know I love a good sweet cocktail but this jun kombucha is also totally my jam. If you like kombucha even a little bit, promise me you'll give this cocktail a try.
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos
Officially this Wild Tonic Jun Kombucha rings in at 5.6% ABV so it has about the same booziness as a light beer. In this case I think that is a pretty accurate representation of how much of a buzz you get from this cocktail. But this is definitely not your mama's beer - unless your mom is a rad yogi from Sedona in which case I'm totally jealous and will she adopt me?
Would I buy these again?
Hell yes! I will be grabbing a Wild Tonic again soon.
Wild Tonic has several other flavors plus a higher 7.6% ABV version. I'll be keeping my eye out for all of nine of these as I shop. Here is the full list of Wild Tonic alcoholic flavors (they do have a alcoholic version as well):
- Blackberry Mint (5.6%)
- Blueberry Basil (5.6%) - always sold out at my Total Wine so it must be a favorite
- Hoppy Buzz (5.6%)
- Mango Ginger (5.6%)
- Raspberry Goji Rose (5.6%) - the one I tried for this review
- Tropical Turmeric (5.6%)
- Dancing Naked (7.6%)
- Mind Spank (7.6%)
- Wild Love (7.6%)
Side note: The Wild Tonic site also has a few cocktail recipes using their jun kombucha so you know I'll have to try that too. I promise to give you an update as soon as I try their kombucha mixology. I have my eye on the "I'm Your Huckleberry" cocktail recipe.
