Canned cocktail review: Joia Spirit Sparkling Margarita (Part 3)

Posted by Jaime Fowler on

Joia Spirit sparkling canned cocktail review by The Pursuit of Cocktails2 down 1 more Joia Spirit cocktail to go

This week I'm trying the last of the three new sparkling canned cocktails from Joia. In case you missed it, you can read my review of their Key Lime Vodka Soda here or the Sparkling Gimlet here.

This week is all about the Sparkling Margarita. Like the other two Joia cocktails, this one is low in sugar and carbs - which is not necessarily what you think of when you think of a margarita. A good marg has a great citrus flavor with hint of tequila and hit of salt. I live for a good margarita. Give me a sunny day and a salted rim margarita on the rocks and I'm a happy girl. So this sparkling margarita has some big shoes to fill. Let's find out how it fairs.

Joia Spirit sparkling margarita canned cocktail review

Here is my official review of Joia Spirit's Sparkling Margarita:

Three cocktail shakers

If you like tart, this is the cocktail for you. This sparkling marg is more like a skinny margarita than a traditional margarita. The first sip is almost pure lime with a hint of triple sec flavor. I really wanted to like this cocktail but it just doesn't do it for me. It lacks the richness a margarita should have. Even a skinny marg.

BUT if you compare it more to a hard seltzer than an actual margarita it doesn't fair so bad. It checks the boxes of being bubbly, light in calories and flavor, and low in sugar. And best of all, it has more booze to it than those hard seltzers so that's a big bonus point in my book.

Sweetness

One cocktail shaker
One shaker = not sweet at all  // Five shakers = your teeth may curl

True to form, this Joia Spirit cocktail is not sweet. It has 6 grams of sugar per can but I didn't pick up any sweetness at all.

Booziness

Three cocktail shakers
One shaker = does this have booze? Five shakers = Four Lokos

Officially this one rings in at 6% ABV. Maybe it's my imagination or maybe it's the tequila but this sparkling Joia cocktail seems stronger than the others even though the percentage is the same. Either way, I enjoyed a nice fuzz from this canned cocktail.

Would I buy this ready to drink cocktail again?

Probably not. I still love my Joia cosmo too much so I think I'll stick to that one. But this the best option for a ready-to-drink skinny margarita I've found so I won't forget about it. There might be the perfect moment to pick these up again in the future.
